One of my pet peeves is for someone to touch my food with their hands. Like…I don’t know if you washed them. And if you did, did you clean under your cuticles?
In this passage, Jesus is explaining that the things that defile you (or make you unclean) are not the things that go into your body, but the things that come out of your mouth. Those things come from the heart.
What you eat doesn’t show that you are a bitter or mean-spirited person. What you eat doesn’t show your transgressions. Now I know there can always be exceptions because this world is crazy, but you get the drift.
Your words express what you feel and how you think. It shows directly what’s in your heart. It shows what type of person you are. Your evil thoughts and desire to do wrong come from your heart. And when I say your heart, I don’t mean your physical heart that pumps blood. I mean your mind…the place where your thoughts originate.
So, let’s do our best to not focus on traditions we have. I know some things are physically disgusting. But instead, let’s focus on the true intentions of the person. And those intentions are shown by what they say. And what they say comes from the heart of the mind.
Let’s also do our best to watch what we say. As Christians, we are to represent God. If what you’re saying will cause someone to think “Oh, I thought she was a Christian”, then let’s do some editing. Let’s put aside foul language and replace that with something that we would say if Jesus were sitting next to us.
Happy Sunday Comfies!
